66th Philippi Festival – Concept & Communication Materials Design
At Artware, we embraced the opportunity to craft the concept and communication materials for the 66th Philippi Festival, a cornerstone of Greek cultural life often mentioned alongside the prestigious Epidaurus Festival.
Our concept centered around the notion of the “Unsung Heroes”, individuals whose contributions remain hidden, much like actors obscured behind their roles. We aimed to capture not only the essence of the festival itself but also the rich history of ancient theater and the cultural significance of Philippi.
Each poster, program, and commercial item was meticulously designed to embody this concept, stirring anticipation among attendees and reflecting the festival’s vibrant atmosphere and esteemed status.
The Philosophy Behind the Design Project
The concept of the “unsung heroes” is nuanced. In ancient Greek theater, characters conveyed deeper meanings through their roles, while actors remained masked. In modern society, unsung heroes are everyday people quietly making a difference without seeking recognition.
In our design project for the 66th Philippi Festival, these unsung heroes take center stage. The visual representation places the human face at its core, with hands obscuring features, allowing only the gaze to pierce the veil of anonymity. Through a single glance, the “unsung hero” and the “audience” exchange roles, revealing themselves at the heart of the scene, both literally and metaphorically.
Elements like the mask and the depiction of the ancient theater’s perspective serve as links to the festival itself, conveying its 66-year history and the cultural significance of Philippi archaeological site. By blending past, present, and future, our concept and communication materials weave a narrative inspired by timeless aesthetics, conveyed through modern channels, and embracing the significance of everyday heroes.
We at Artware are proud to have contributed to a festival that is much more than a series of cultural events; it is a yearly pilgrimage for the arts, a celebration of the enduring power of drama, and a universal symbol of the Greek culture throughout the centuries. We approached this design project as an opportunity to showcase our commitment to excellence and our dedication to enhancing cultural and artistic impact through visual representation.
